The inaugural Waverley Words Literary Festival was an innovative program of literary events held in late 2009 as part of Waverley Council's 150 years celebration.

The Festival connected professional writers with the Waverley community, local businesses, government, arts groups and organisations. More than published 50 writers participated in 37 events such as book talks, poetry and performance, theatre, and spoken word workshops. Writers and literary groups received financial and in-kind support, including the presentation of $30,000 in prizes.

Over 15 local businesses, cultural organisations and groups partnered with Council to present events at commercial and community venues across Waverley. Eight targeted events for children and young people were held to promote reading, writing, performance, and a new network.

The Festival provided meaningful community engagement by providing workshops and reading programs, connecting with local businesses and community groups, using non-traditional venues to connect with new audiences, and by supporting local writers.
