Accessible Arts - Award Winner

Kogarah City Council is committed to promoting a society in which people with a disability fully experience and participate in the arts and cultural life.

In 2009, Kogarah City Council in partnership with St George School (providing education for students with severe physical & multiple disabilities) and artist Sonja Karl initiated an Accessible Arts project aimed at providing an avenue for all students to explore their artistic abilities.

From the first workshop, students and staff showed great enthusiasm and willingness to be part of this unique and exciting project. As 2009 was the Year of Astronomy, it was decided to explore this theme further through a range of innovative art mediums that was appropriate to students’ capabilities.

The Movement in Space project created 5 large murals which were launched during 2009 International Day of People with a Disability and are now displayed at the school.
