Surry Hills Library and Community Centre - view from Collins St.

The Surry Hills Library and Community Centre was designed to provide excellence in library services, best practice in multi-purpose community facilities and to set new benchmarks in environmental performance for community buildings. The library has been enthusiastically embraced by all members of the community who appreciate its beautiful contemporary design, facilities and services, its integration into the community and who are inspired by the environmentally sustainable elements of the building. For the City of Sydney, it is an excellent example of realising our vision of Sustainable Sydney 2030 including:

• Every resident within a 10 minute walk to fresh food markets, childcare, health services and leisure, social, learning and cultural infrastructure.
• Reductions of greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 2006 levels.
• Capacity to meet up to 100% of electricity demand by local electricity generation and 10% of water supply by local water capture.
